Gum graft procedures are relatively common surgical procedures utilized by Dr. Markzar, periodontist in Beverly Hills, to improve the aesthetics of a patient’s smile. This procedure is also very useful when used to address dental issues such as extreme tooth sensitivity, tooth abrasion, or gingival recession.
Gum grafts can be used to effectively treat gingival recession due to extensive gingivitis. If left untreated, receding gums can ultimately lead to deterioration of the alveolar bone and loss of teeth, including exposed roots.
During this procedure, tissue is intricately extracted from roof of the mouth. The graft is then carefully placed on to the exposed area, where gums have receded. It is then seamlessly attached with fine sutures to promote proper healing.
In cases where a significant amount of teeth need to be grafted, tissue grafting material may be used. This eliminates the need to harvest tissue from patient’s palates.
